High altitude balloons
From Esrange, scientific experiments are launched to altitudes of up to 45 km with the help of balloons.
The balloons are helium-filled and, when fully expanded, able to reach a volume of 1.2 million cubic meters. ´
The usage of the balloons includes environmental studies of our sensitive atmosphere, e.g. ozone depletion and other phenomena linked to mankind’s activities on earth. Astronomical observations can be carried out by a telescope being lifted above 90% of the atmosphere, which otherwise would cause interference to such observations. Technical flights are also carried out to develop the next generation of balloons and to test various technical systems.
